Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 October 2026
Campable Limited ("Campable", "we", "us") runs campable.com and the Campable apps: a New Zealand marketplace where people with private land ("Hosts") list places to stay, and travellers in campervans, motorhomes, caravans and tents ("Guests") find and book them.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who we share it with, where it is stored, and your rights under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. Words like "Host", "Guest" and "Site" have the meaning given in our Terms and Conditions.
The short version
- We collect what we need to run bookings: your account details, bookings, messages, payments (through Stripe) and, for Hosts, payout and tax details.
- Guests and Hosts see some of each other's details once a booking is confirmed. Before that, contact details in messages are hidden.
- Card and bank details are held by Stripe, not by us. IRD numbers and dates of birth are encrypted.
- Some of our service providers store information overseas, mainly in the United States.
- You can see, correct or delete your information. Email support@campable.com.
1. What we collect
Information you give us
- Your account: name, email address, phone number, password (or your Google or Facebook sign-in), profile photo and anything you write about yourself.
- Guests: your vehicle details (type, length, registration) and its self-containment status; who's coming on each booking (number of people, how many are children, and whether you're bringing pets, with a short description of them); booking requests, including the message you send the Host.
- Hosts: your property and listing details (address and map location, sites, prices, photos, videos, house rules, private arrival instructions and gate codes); your payout details; and for Stripe's identity checks, details such as your date of birth, address and ID. Stripe collects these directly (see section 4).
- Tax details (Hosts): your IRD number, legal name, address and date of birth (or company name and NZBN). New Zealand's rules on reporting by digital platforms require us to report Hosts' earnings to Inland Revenue each year. We store your IRD number and date of birth encrypted, and only use them for that reporting.
- Messages: messages you send through Campable to other users or to our team.
- Reviews: reviews Guests write about places, Hosts' public replies, and reviews Hosts write about Guests (ratings, an optional public comment and an optional private note to Campable).
- How you heard about us: if you tell us how you found Campable, or you arrive through a partner, affiliate or referral link, we record that so the right partner is credited.
- Photos and videos you upload. On the website, photos are re-encoded before upload, which removes hidden location (GPS) data from them.
- Anything else you send us, such as support requests, feedback or survey answers.
Information we collect when you use Campable
- Device and usage information: IP address, browser and device type, pages and listings viewed, searches, and dates and times. Our servers record this automatically.
- Location: if you allow it, the app uses your device's location to show places near you. You can turn this off in your phone's settings. The app also saves some booking details (such as directions) on your device so you can see them without mobile coverage.
- Notifications: if you allow notifications, we store a token for your device so we can send booking and message alerts (through Google Firebase).
- Cookies and similar tools: see the Cookie Policy below.
Information we get from other people (see also section 8)
- Hosts tell us about Guests who stayed with them (host reviews and private notes).
- Campable Pathfinders (see section 4) may give us information about a Host's property, including site-check photos. The location data in those photos is used to confirm the photo was taken at the property.
- Stripe tells us whether a Host's identity and bank details have been verified.
- Google or Facebook give us your name, email address and profile photo if you sign in with them.
- Partners and affiliates tell us when someone they referred joins or books.
- Other users or the public may report a problem with a user or listing.
2. Why we use it
We use your information to:
- run your account and the website and apps;
- make bookings work: show listings, take payments, pay Hosts, handle cancellations and refunds, and send confirmations;
- send you service messages by email and app notification (for example booking confirmations, new messages, reminders about expiring cards, and review requests). Campable doesn't send text messages;
- keep Campable safe and fair: prevent fraud, check listings, verify identity (through Stripe), apply the review rules, and investigate complaints;
- meet our legal obligations, including tax reporting to Inland Revenue and keeping financial records;
- help Hosts, if they ask, with their listing and with a Google Business Profile for their campsite;
- credit partners, affiliates and Pathfinders for the people they bring to Campable;
- understand how Campable is used, so we can improve it;
- send marketing emails about Campable. You can unsubscribe from any marketing email using the link in it. Service messages about your bookings will still be sent.
3. Messages
To protect Guests and Hosts, we automatically check messages sent through Campable.
- Before a booking is confirmed, phone numbers, email addresses, street addresses, web links, social media handles and phrases like "book direct" or "pay cash" are replaced with "[hidden by Campable]". This keeps stays covered by the booking, payment and cancellation terms, and stops people being asked to pay outside Campable.
- Once a booking is confirmed (until a week after the stay), contact details are no longer hidden in that conversation.
- Our team may read messages when needed to resolve a problem or complaint, investigate misuse, or help you when you ask. Messages in your Campable thread go directly to our team. We may also join a conversation between a Guest and a Host to help, for example to answer a question or sort out a problem. When we do, both of you see that we've joined, and anything we write goes to both of you. Campable may also add short automatic notes to a conversation, such as reminding Guests to pay only through Campable, or explaining that each vehicle needs its own booking.
- We don't use messages to target advertising, and we don't sell them.
Ask for help (our help assistant). On the website and in Hosts' pages you can ask our help assistant a question. It's provided using Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. When you use it, we send Anthropic what you type, the page you're on and, for Hosts, details of your own listing, so it can answer. Anthropic processes this for us under its commercial terms and doesn't use it to train its models. We keep each chat (what you typed, the answers, and whether you rated them) to answer follow-up questions, fix problems and improve the help, and our team may read chats, for example when you pass one to us. If you're not signed in, we keep only a random code your browser stores and what you type, not your name or email, so please don't put personal details in the chat. Answers can be wrong, and the assistant never books, publishes or changes anything unless you say yes.
4. Who we share information with
Other users
- Public listing: a Host's first name, profile photo, listing text, photos, videos, public reviews and replies, and the approximate location of the property are public, and can appear in search engines, on partners' sites and on Google Maps. The exact address, gate codes, private arrival instructions and arrival video are only given to Guests with a confirmed booking.
- Booking requests and bookings: the Host sees the Guest's name, profile photo, party details (people, children, pets), vehicle details and self-containment, and the Guest's message. Once a booking is confirmed, the Host and Guest can see each other's contact details, and replying to a booking confirmation email goes to the other person.
- Reviews: reviews are double-blind. Neither side sees the other's review until both are in, or 14 days after check-out. Guests' reviews of places and Hosts' replies are public. Hosts' ratings of Guests are not public. Campable uses them to keep stays safe (for example, a Guest with low ratings from Hosts has to request to book, and the Host decides), and they may be shown to a Host considering that Guest's request. Private notes to Campable are not shown to the other person.
- We never share your card or bank details with other users.
Campable Pathfinders
Pathfinders are local contractors who help Hosts set up and check listings. A Pathfinder who is helping a Host, or checking a site, can see that Host's name, contact details and listing details. Pathfinders must keep this information confidential and only use it for that work.
Service providers
We use trusted companies to run Campable. They only use your information to provide their service to us:
| Provider | What they do | Where the data is held | |---|---|---| | Google Cloud and Firebase | Hosting, database, file storage, sign-in, app notifications and app analytics | United States | | Stripe | Card payments, Host payouts (Stripe Connect) and identity checks | United States and other countries | | Twilio SendGrid | Sending emails | United States | | Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics | Website analytics | United States | | Meta (Facebook) | Facebook sign-in (if you choose it) and advertising measurement | United States | | Branch | App download and deep links | United States | | Contentful | Website content (no user accounts) | United States / European Union | | Google Maps | Maps on the website and apps | United States | | Anthropic | The help assistant (Claude) | United States |
Stripe. Stripe collects and keeps card details and Hosts' bank and identity details itself, under Stripe's privacy policy. We only receive what we need, such as the last four digits and expiry date of a card, and whether a Host's account is verified.
Google Business Profile. If a Host asks us to help set up or manage a Google Business Profile for their campsite, we share the listing details the Host agrees to with Google, and Campable is added as a manager of that profile. The Host owns the profile, and we remove ourselves as a manager if they stop hosting.
Inland Revenue and other authorities. We report Hosts' earnings and tax details to Inland Revenue as the law requires. We may also disclose information when the law requires it, or where we believe it's necessary to prevent or investigate fraud or a serious threat to someone's safety, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights of Campable or our users.
If Campable's business changes. If Campable is sold or merged, your information may pass to the new owner, who must keep protecting it as this policy says.
We may publish statistics that don't identify anyone.
We don't sell your personal information.
5. Sending information overseas
Many of our providers (listed above) store information outside New Zealand, mainly in the United States. The United States doesn't have privacy laws that give protection comparable to New Zealand's. Where we send personal information overseas, we choose established providers who are bound by contract to keep it secure and to only use it to provide their service to us, as the Privacy Act (Information Privacy Principle 12) requires.
6. Keeping it secure
- All connections to Campable are encrypted.
- Card and bank details are held by Stripe, not by us.
- IRD numbers and dates of birth are stored with extra encryption and only decrypted when needed for tax reporting.
- Only staff and contractors who need it can access personal information.
No system is completely secure. If a privacy breach happens that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected as soon as practicable, as the Privacy Act requires.
7. How long we keep it
- Your account: until you delete it.
- Booking, payment and tax records: 7 years, because New Zealand law requires businesses to keep financial records. When you delete your account, your name and contact details are removed from these records.
- Messages: while your account is open, and longer if they are needed for an unresolved dispute or investigation.
- Help assistant chats: 12 months from the last message, unless a chat you passed to us is still being sorted out.
- Public reviews: stay on the listing after an account is deleted, without the reviewer's contact details.
- Photos and videos: removed from Campable when you delete them or your account.
8. Information we collect from other people
Sometimes we get information about you from someone else (listed in section 1), such as a Host's review of you, a Pathfinder's site check of your property, Stripe's verification result, or a partner who referred you. This policy is how we tell you about it: what we collect, why, who receives it, and your right to see and correct it. Where it's practical and appropriate, we also tell you directly.
9. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it if it's wrong. If we don't agree to change it, you can ask us to attach a statement of the correction you asked for;
- delete your account at any time. See how to delete your account. You can do it in the app (My Profile → Delete Account), or by emailing support@campable.com;
- update most details yourself by signing in to your account.
To make a request, email support@campable.com. We will reply within 20 working days. We may need to confirm who you are first. There's no charge.
If you're not happy with how we've handled your information, please talk to us first. You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz, 0800 803 909).
10. Other websites
Campable links to other websites and uses Google Maps. Their own privacy policies apply to them. The Google privacy policy applies to Google Maps.
11. Children
Campable accounts are for adults. Children can travel with their family, and Guests tell us how many children are coming, but we don't ask for children's names or other details.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the date at the top, and if a change is significant we will let you know by email or in the app.

Cookie Policy
Cookies are small files that a website saves in your browser. We and some of our providers use cookies and similar tools (such as tracking pixels and links in emails) on the Campable website.
What we use them for
- Essential: keeping you signed in, remembering your choices, and making bookings and payments work (including Stripe's fraud-prevention cookies).
- Analytics: Google Analytics (through Google Tag Manager) tells us which pages are used, so we can improve the website. On the app, Google Firebase does the same.
- Advertising and attribution: Meta (Facebook) Pixel and similar tools measure whether our adverts work, and may be used to show you Campable adverts on other sites. Branch helps work out whether someone installed the app from a link. Partner and affiliate links use a cookie so the right partner is credited for a booking.
- Where visitors come from: when you arrive at campable.com through one of our advertising links, or from an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude, we note which one. We add one to a daily count for that source; this count doesn't include your IP address or anything else about you. Your browser also remembers that source for 30 days (in local storage, not a cookie). If you create an account in that time, we record it on your account so we know which advertising works. We don't share it with anyone. If your browser sends a "Do Not Track" or "Global Privacy Control" signal, we don't remember the source.
- Email: some of our emails contain a small image or tracked link that tells us whether the email was opened or a link clicked.
Your choices
- A cookie notice appears the first time you visit the website.
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block essential cookies, you may not be able to sign in or book.
- You can limit ad personalisation in your Google ad settings and Facebook ad preferences, and opt out of Google Analytics with Google's opt-out add-on.
- On your phone, you can reset your advertising ID or limit ad tracking in your phone's settings.
Changes to this Cookie Policy are made in the same way as changes to the Privacy Policy above.
